Amoeba Music

Loved their LP selections. I found some nice, hard to find jazz LPs and 1980's LP from back in the day.It's been many years since I've been to this once vibrant area along with a stop at Moe's for used books. The area is pretty run down looking now. However, I still felt safe with the students running around, the chessplayers on the corner ... plan to return when in the area.

When I think of Berkeley, I think of Rasputin's and Amoeba (well and Artichoke's, Cheeseboard, Blondie's, and Zachary's but that is for a different review). Both have downsized over the years, but I have spent hundreds of hours in both. If you are still into physical media, Amoeba's is a great place to start. The staff is friendly and helpful. Vinyl is making a comeback, and Amoeba sells turntables, cartridges, and slipmats too. Note: the Berkeley location is closed Mondays and Tuesdays. And the hours Wednesday through Sunday are shorter. So check online, before heading there.

I avoid this place. The entire pricing model is based off what's the highest a record has ever sold for online, usually regardless of condition. I wanted to buy that Modern Art record off the wall but at $1,500, that's unrealistic. Ended up getting an original press off eBay in the same condition for just over $300.My advice, stay home and browse eBay or Discogs instead of coming here.

One of two iconic record shops in Berkeley (the other being Rasputin's). An overwhelming selection of records, CDs and music paraphernalia. Any type of music, or artist, you can think of they have in both new or used.
