If you're looking for a unique coffee shop in the Heights area of Houston, Maggie May's Coffee is your best bet. It's located inside of Black Dog Records, a record shop with 15,000+ vinyl records. They even have a listening station with two record players that you can listen to all of the records. There are plenty of tables to sit at, and there are also outlets if you need to get some work done. Maggie May's Coffee also offers free Wi-Fi.As for the menu, they have plenty of options such as traditional espressos, lattés, drip coffee, loose leaf teas, and miscellaneous beverages (I've attached a photo in this review so you can see them all). They also have pastries available if you need a little bite to eat. I met James, the owner, and he gave us a grand tour of his new records store/coffee shop. He explained they've been officially open since Mid-April 2019, and they moved locations recently.I ordered the Iced Jasmine Green Tea for $3.00. James steeped it perfectly as it was not bitter. Halfway through my tea, James even steeped a second batch and refreshed my drink as he explained the ice will dilute the tea over time. This was a really nice move on his part. He explained how the loose leaf teas can be steeped multiple times as it's quite strong, and it's better to use it rather than just waste it.I really enjoyed my time at Maggie May's Coffee. It's located in a cool area of the Heights. There is plenty of parking available in their private lot shared with neighboring businesses. They have an outdoor patio with a "dog parking" area to tie up your fur baby if needed. They are definitely dog friendly at Black Dog Records! Although the strip of businesses have never looked too inviting before, Black Dog Records & Maggie May's Coffee is an amazing addition to the neighborhood. Welcome to the Heights! I can see myself being a frequent visitor with their quality ice teas during the hot summer months in Houston.
Black dog and Maggie May’s coffee dream team moved from Belaire to Heights 726 19th . Reasonably priced good selection, good conversation. Have some coffee buy a record, and enjoy
I went to this place on a whim to just check it out. As I walked in it was very obvious where all the genres were and it was very easy to find a few of my favorite artists. I was greeted by the owner's father who was standing in for the day. He was incredibly nice and it just worked out that we had a lot in common, both music and the industry we work in. They had some good music playing and the father was giving me suggestions on artists and albums and giving me some information on the different pressings (as I am a bit new to the vinyl scene). The prices were really good. I originally bought some albums off of amazon and this place had better prices than they did. Also if there is any issue with the record when you first open and play it they will try and make it right whereas it is a whole thing to ship the album back to amazon etc. That is a real perk to a brick and mortar place. There were a few other customers there and people were just kind of chatting and looking through albums. It was a very friendly environment and absolutely no rush or sales tactics involved. I ended up buying several albums because I'm building my collection and I felt I was getting a really fair price. They didn't have every album I was looking for but they still had a pretty wide collection. Most of the albums are in the classic rock genre which just happens to be my favorite so I was able to find several I wanted. I will definitely come back and purchase more albums. The only downside I could say is their location could be better. From what I understand they are looking at new spots though. Nothing bad but for their sake a nicer strip would be good, something with more foot traffic.
It really is as good as the reviews say. James is the best, the shop is amazing and organized, they play awesome music, there are so many different pressings and imports to choose from, and from what I've seen, he makes great deals with customers. I was even able to get a couple of pins I was eyeing, on the house! I usually go with my friend and every time James is very open and friendly to us. I'm not a big collector, but seriously, you should go if you are ever itching for quality records.
The BEST place I know for used records, extremely clean and still priced low! Selection is great, although, as a huge Madonna fan, I find myself ordering records online more often than finding them at the store (like all others). They have great selections on classic & punk rock, metal, and oldies pop. Staff is amazingly helpful and will answer any vinyl related questions easily. Very friendly!
